I took her out in the back garden last weekend as I finally got around to uncovering all the lawn furniture, putting up the hammock, pulling the tarps off the bikes and most importantly opening up the sand box. I was so excited to get outside and to get Baby C outside too. I put her down in the grass and she just stared at the grass then up at me, then down at the grass then up at me. She finally took a step and then stood still, she took another step, wobbled a little and fell forward but braced herself as she went. Her little hands touched the blades of grass, each finger feeling an unfamiliar texture.
Our dirt is uneven way in the back of our garden and the grass that she has to walk on is therefore slightly uneven and for a little girl who's only been walking for 3 weeks and still walks like Herman Monster from the Adams Family, the terrain is a little tricky. So with each step she seemed to weeble and wobble until, her diaper padded butt finally gave way and she was sitting in the grass with this look on her face!! If she could have cursed I think she might have!
I let her sit there for a while and as she sat she did that arching of the back (the one that kids learn how to master when they're acting out in public) and began to whine and ended up lying in the grass, the same grass that she seemed to hate so much. I let her lay for a while and the sight of the clear blue sky up above seemed to calm her and she lay for quite a while watching the branches sway and the clouds roll by. I thought to myself how much we take for granted and how this was probably the first time she'd been on her back and looked up at the sky like this.
Once the moment passed she remembered her dislike for grass and began to whine. I figured she'd endured enough and I was then forced to hose down the lawn chairs with 20lbs hoist on my side. Once all the chairs we drying out in the sun, I sat down on the grass with her and opened up the sand box. I soon found out that, I was WAY more excited about this sand box than she'll ever be! I cleaned the sand and grabbed her new birthday sand kit and plopped her and the sand kit in the sand box.
At first she looked at me with despair and bewilderment then disgust. She lifted each leg, one at a time out of the sand desperately trying to lift both feet out of the sand but all the while still sit on her butt. I realized she didn't care for this new environment and I quickly began to laugh, smile and play with the sand. She began to turn her frown upside down but obviously only to appease me as she slowly let her feet slide back into the sand. I quickly sprinkled the sand over each of her legs, covering her toes, so she could feel the grains slowly trickle and tickle her legs.
She sat for a while and then commenced to let me know that fun time was over and she'd done all she could to amuse herself with these new things called grass and sand. She was done and if I didn't get her out, she'd get herself out!!!
REWIND <<<<<< back to the receipt. I LOVE the outdoors! If I could stay outside come rain or shine that's where I'd prefer to be. So the fact that Baby C seemed disgusted by the grass and sand was totally shocking to me. I thought she'd take to both like a duck to water, merely based on the genes I'd passed down to her!!! So because of all this I'm convinced I took the wrong duck home from the pond!!! I didn't give birth to a princess or a diva in the making did I???? I can't do the nails, and the lipsticks and the dress up....I'm a mud, sand and camping in the woods kind of girl. She'd better learn to love the sand really quickly too...we're going camping in the middle of June and we're not taking the princess thrown with us either!!!

Hey, maybe she's really MY daughter!!! I HATE yardwork, camping and stuff like that. I mean, I enjoy "being" outside...but not in a working capacity. I am a girly girl to my core! And both of my girls are too. Well, Jayla maybe not so much...she likes to "dig" in the yard and play outdoor sports. And Briyanna, well...OK, OK...neither of these girls took after me. But Courtney did!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteHee Hee! Have a great day! Kim
ReplyDeleteThis was both beautiful and funny. I felt like I was there, watching every blade of grass, and I laughed outloud when she was disgusted. Great post.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny! I feel like I was there. I'm not a huge fan of sand, but sandboxes are different. With the toys and the clean sand...maybe it'll grow on her.
ReplyDeletePoor little princess. I love her little sun hat, too. So cute.
When she's a teenager, and wants to go to the beach for Spring Break, you've got the proof that she doesn't even like sand!!
:)Chrissy
I live in FLorida and can't stand the beach. People look at me funny. Also, not an outdoors person, but my son is. LOVES it. I hate to be dirty and gross. But, I am not a diva. I will get dirty if necessary.
ReplyDeleteMy son didn't care for sand much at first, but they change their minds quickly. I'm sure she'll be a sand loving child before you know it!
What a great story...perfectly told! had me laughing.
ReplyDeleteI love the outdoors too...maybe if you give her some more time she'll end up liking it. I don't know what I'll do if Megan ends up being a real girly girl! I am SO NOT!
Too funny. I am not into the great outdoors myself so maybe she belongs to moi :)
ReplyDeleteShe is too cute! Love the way you captured the story as well. My eldest son absolutely hated the grass for his first few years of life. Wouldn't step foot on it (which made it easy to corral him in our fenceless backyard). Now? He'd gladly live in the grass among the bugs and creatures he loves to catch outside. Enjoy it while it lasts your princess may change her mind eventually.
ReplyDeleteWe will trade you one dirt eating, worm grabbing boy for the week of your camping trip...just bring that lil' princess our way!
ReplyDeleteOh I was such a diva as a kid...hated to get dirty and messy. I had a sandbox and I would sit on the side and lean over to dig in. I would NOT get IN! Now I would sit in it quite happitly but as a kid? NO way. I was awful...do you think she is MY kid?? Hm...I mean, I have loads of senior moments...I might have forgotten I had one...and I *was* a childhood diva. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteBut I bet she will take to it all eventually! She will follow what you all do and learn to embrace it. That sand will get under her skin...maybe literally! *laugh*
Just takes time! My nephew did not like it at first but loves it now! Won't get out!
Loved the story! You are quite the tale spinner!
Happy Mom's Day!!!
Hugs,
Sue
That first line cracked me up!!! I have those days when I want to return them!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute story!!
that is so funny. my boys, specially Nikolas, hate walking on grass without shoes on. i think it is a toddler thing. they go through texture issues :) and the grass must feel gross to them.
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh. I agree is must be a texture thing that Baby C will hopefully get used to. I love the part about not bringing her thrown. I think I will have to use that statement on my 13 yr daughter!
ReplyDeleteSounds like me. Sand in my toes is just plain...yuck !
ReplyDeleteI love camping. But I am pissed as you know that the gas prices are up. Where are you going camping at? I have a princess too but she seems to love the outdoors.
ReplyDeleteGive her a chance. Goodness it is only her first time with uneven turf, new outdoor textures and the whole sand experience. Keep taking her out and do the same routine but lay on your back with her and talk about the sky and watch her reaction change. New mommies crack me up!
ReplyDeleteKansas Queen did you think I was being serious with this post? I thought the title alone about finding the receipt and taking her back would have been sign enough that I was NOT taking the matter seriously, but rather it's a post in mere jest.
ReplyDeleteAs my old friend would say..."easy tiger calm down or did I miss the humor in your comment and you're not really telling me "for goodness sake give her a chance"!"
Everyone else started their comments out letting me know that they knew that I was being silly, I'm getting from you that you're taking this quite literal!! LOL...see I'm still laughing about the entire matter!!!!!
LOL, so well written! It might take her awhile but she'll love it I bet!
