Wake up call !!

So this weekend I went to a Lia Sophia Jewelry Party and spent over $200!!!! I went to the party with the intention of mingling; eating and having a good time with a bunch of women who’s husbands work with C but I had never met them. Well a few glasses of sparkling grape juice later (I can’t wait to have a real glass of wine!!) I had perused the catalogue and was narrowing down my selection, I handed the women my amex and she sadly told me that she didn’t take Amex!!!! What to do, what to do, what to do…I couldn’t tell if this was sign from god telling me..."Why in the world are you buying $200 worth of jewelry when you’re about to give birth next month!!"

Well I hope it wasn’t god talking to me as I completely ignored him…grabbed my cell phone called C and put on that "oh my life is over" voice and asked if he could give me a credit card number of his over the phone!!! Now if any of you know C, giving such personal information out over a wireless device is like admitting that you work for the CIA even after you’ve died!!!!!!

After he’d given me a little parenting talk about how ludicrous it was to spend that much right before giving birth he finally caved in and gave me his number and I proudly walked back to the lady and paid. (Why in the world a jewelry company wouldn’t take Amex is beyond me, unless they deliberately want to stop their business from growing... I mean I understand that the merchant fee for Amex is higher than other companies but as expensive as some of their jewelry was they could easily cover it and still make a profit!) (Above is one of the items I bought! I also bought a necklace for A (Step daughter) to wear at a wedding we're going to in May)

So while I was at the party I got a text message that thankfully I didn’t read until around 7 hours after receiving it...other wise I might have given birth right on their hard wood floors of my friends house!!! The text message said that C’s brother was just admitted into the ER. His blood sugar levels were over 600...and they wanted to keep him for observation over night as they had just diagnosed that he was a diabetic. Thankfully C had told me all of this over the phone before I even read his text message so the delivery was calmer than if I had read it while laughing and drinking. I think it was the mere shock that he was in hospital that got me as I had no idea what level sugar was naturally supposed to be at in the body. I just read this morning that "Two hours after eating it's supposed to be below 140" and he was at 600!!!! The severity of it all is now in perspective...a few more hours and he could have gone into a diabetic coma!! C has two brothers and two sisters and this is the second brother to be diagnosed with diabetes so it’s very scary to say the least. I always wondered why C was such a picky eater but he’s been watching what he eats for years just because of the health of his siblings...it all makes sense now. (Above is a picture of C's brother, he always knew he was a big boy and should watch his sugar but he wanted to just enjoy life instead...he's an excellent cook as well!!)

I think C’s brother will be fine as long as he takes this as a serious wake up call and does what he needs to do, now that he’s been diagnosed. I think he is apprehensive about pricking himself and giving himself shots...I can’t imagine what that might feel like. One of my favorite aunts...aunt V was diagnosed as being a diabetic years ago...I feel like it's one of those ailments (not sure if this is even the right word to describe it) that's hard for me to grasp. I understand the scientific explaination but I'll never understand what a tremendous life altering event it is and the day to day effects that it can have. I just remember how much weight my Aunt V lost once she adapted her life style and eating habits once she accepted everything. It's not like you can take a pill and make it go away...it's so much more than that.

But onto a lighter note... just bought my step daughter the cutest back pac from Pottery Barn and got her last name stitched on the front. I have no idea how she goes through them so quickly but this is the first Pottery Barn or LL Bean quality kind of back pac that we have ever bought her...it’s usually those cheaper $20 kinds so I’m interested to see if it makes a difference. I feel it will make a difference, but I don’t think C is convinced. I can’t wait to see it though when it comes in the mail, I got one for C a few years ago from LL Bean for when we go camping and got his knick name stiched on it and I love it (so does he but don't ask him to admit it!)....I can't wait to see A's face when she sees it...I think she’s going to love it!!! Even though it’s not Hello Kitty!!!

GOOD NEWS..."I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by"....no seriously...I just found out that a basketball pool that I entered on behalf off C at my job just won!!! Even though it's not over no one else can beat us no matter what the rest of the results are...so we just won a quick $130 after only putting in $10!! That's most of the jewlery paid off if you ask me...but then who's asking!!!

  1. I hope the $200 worth of jewelry looks nice on Baby C- oh, I forgot it was for you! Pitiful, M, pitiful! However, the next 20 years will be everything for the baby so you better enjoy it these last 3 weeks or so!

  2. Hi,

Didn't have your email address to respond to your comments so I posted it here...

We went skiing in Big Bear, CA. Supposedly good for beginners. My husband is hooked now and wants to take more lessons so he can not eat snow so much. We are trying to decide whether or not to go snowboarding. I think I want to stick to skiing.

How many months along are you? I saw all the goodies you got, looks like you will be ready.

  6. I am so proud to read about your life, Melanie. You are too cute. I don't have a BLOG but I can catch you up a little: I got married on February 5, 2006 and would like to have a bun in the oven soon like you. It was nice to read up on how to get pregnant - I found that I am doing all the wrong things. LOL!
I had been getting these emails that read: Melanie has updated her blog and I was like, "Melanie who?" I will be sure to pass the link onto Leslie Green (form, Brown), Greg Hinex and Derrick Finley - all from your Bethel College days. God Bless you and your family. Looking forward to your next post. Love, Chywonna Gonzalez (form. Iverson).
