Life after Congress!

Can you imagine being a lawmaker and having to start a career after you leave congress? For 27 members of Congress, Tuesday was the first day of the rest of their lives!! Doesn't that sound weird!

I know you're probably saying..."Please don't even feel sorry for them." and it's not that I feel sorry for them but that I can't imagine being their age (as most of them are my parents or grandparents age) and having to START my career.

Do you know there's actually a "United States Association of Former Members of Congress."...who WANTS to be a member of a former member club....I mean you either want to remain a member or forget it.

Apparently they all spent Tuesday morning getting advice on how to disengage from Capitol Hill and find new careers. Ouch! Some are retiring voluntarily! (which is nice.) Others were fired by the voters last month. Double Ouch!!!

This is the part that really made me chuckle when the woman from the finance office, explained, "Your final paycheck will be February 1 and that will be a two-day paycheck. Out of the two-day paycheck we will take your full health insurance premium." LOL

I mean I have no clue how much they get paid but can you imagine YOUR check being two days worth of pay and then to have your FULL health insurance premium taken out. I guess I should look at it as their checks are that big that their FULL premium can EVEN be deducted!!

NPR said that after the meeting adjourned only ONE former congresswoman would speak with reporters about her future plans of traveling abroad and spending time with the family. Most of the other newly defeated congressmen kept their heads down and kept walking.

What...they had NOTHING to say? Don't they usually have TONS to say about NOTHING!!! LOL I'm really not making light of it...it's just something I've never thought about and I'm not sure what I do if it was me 30 years from now.

Off on a tangent I was down in the lunch room and the receptionist was talking to another woman excitedly about the fact that the local grocery store has brisket for $1.99 per pound. I immediately thought...wow will I ever be older where I'm excited about the price of brisket? Or for that matter will I ever know “what is a good price per pound for ANYTHING?” I just go to BJ's and COSTCO and whatever they have they have...I have no clue if it's a good price per pound or not, how do you know these things? Is there a class I missed in college?!! LOL (Oh and by the way the lunch rooms new vending machine has BBQ Buffalo Wings!!)

But then who am I to judge in regards to what makes one person excited...I mean here I am writing a post on congress, the price of brisket and buffalo wings, I'm a fine one to talk! LOL

  3. Oooh I love NPR. I even got my truck driving husband to listen to NPR. I have a friend between her and her Mom seem to know the prices at all the major grocery stores in town (and some of the small ones too!) I get what the budget says I can this week and thats about it. So still no crab legs for me this week just fish sticks. LOL

  4. Yeah, that would suck, wouldn't it. I think I'd take a vacation. AND what if their check isn't enough to cover the premium? Do they bill them for the rest? How long does the insurance coverage last??
When I was a kid my grandma used to go on and on about how much more stuff cost than... I don't know when, but it was always more. Even if it was 10 cents it irritated her!

  5. When Christine mentioned crab legs, it took me back to Pelican Pete's in Maryland! I miss their all you can eat crab legs. Anyway, I imagine most of the former congressmen and woman write books to supplement their incomes. To me the bigger question is what happens to their staff because don't new congress people bring their own staff?
