BEFORE
AFTER
I just spent the day downloading PDF versions of my old Lego sets and realized that most come from 1977 and 1980's. I got the above "Grand Emporium" set for Christmas from my husband after loving but not having the time to do Lego in 20 years!!
I did one level each day just because I didn't want it to end and I was desperately trying to savior the moment.
I took about an hour per level quavering between finding the pieces as I needed them, just like the old days and picking out the pieces ahead of time based on the instructions (a luxury I didn't have years ago as it didn't tell you how many pieces of which you needed when I was a child. When did that happen?)
Before I was even done I started googling the Fire Brigade and the Green Grocer to buy, I was that excited. I still have yet to figure out why the Green Grocer ($289) cost so much but hey!
When I was finally and regrettably done with the "Grand Emporium" I didn't understand why I had extra pieces left over and after looking at the last page that lists the inventory I see they merely give you extra pieces. Back in my day this would have elicited a state of panic and confusion and would have indicated that you "royally" messed up somewhere!!
I was at first also taken a back by the targeted age being 16+ I've never seen an age so high for lego.
Baby C was mesmerized with each level and the final product. And now I'm a little over protective on her wanting to touch it now it's complete!!
I loved every second of this set and found the highlights to be:
1. The escalator (and like a reviewer on Amazon said, I don't know what I would have done with myself had it actually moved!)
2. The chandelier was ingenious use of pieces backwards,
3. Loved the skylights!
They even had mannequins for the shops store front!
And a revolving door!!!
I feel so old talking about "back in my day" but I feel like this present really did take me back, and rekindle a long lost love I've had with lego. So what next....maybe the Taj Mahal ($559) or a real moving Carousel ($485) !!!!
that is so cool! i love legos!
ReplyDeleteWe are big Lego fans here, too. I can't figure out WHY they're so expensive. Nor can I figure out why there are no decent knock offs. In essence, they are tiny pieces of plastic. Durable, yes. Fun, of course. Timeless and last forever, BUT...you'd think they would have come up with a way to make them cheaper by now.
ReplyDeleteI think the elevator is so very cool. I can't wait to see what you get next!
How fun for you! My son is 16 and still loves legos. I hope he keeps it going!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing constructive or creative from my childhood. Well, maybe paint-by-number sets were my great glory. I just might go out and buy a set now. Wow, you really did a fantastic job. Does Baby C have any interest in taking up your old habit.
ReplyDeleteI had no clue they even made such elaborate sets!!
