Halloween Candy and Layoffs!

My company has been downsizing for what feels like years now. We all saw the light at the end of the tunnel....we all knew we were on the Titanic but we just never knew exactly when we'd go for our life vest.

I thought the ship would finally sink in June of 2012....I think I planned on grabbing my life vest around January and prayed I could tread water until June.

But my life vest got yanked away this past week! YIKES! At the end of this year I am officially laid off from my current employer.

I wasn't at work when they gave 50 employees the news that they were being laid off.

I was home tending to the WORST stomach virus/food poisoning I've ever had in my life.

Not to be too graphic...ah heck yes it is graphic....I never knew during a stomach virus/food poising that something could come out of both ends at the SAME time! I didn't know the body was capable of such feats!!!

But who am I to doubt....I mean I already know that god is an awesome god of course he would make the body capable of such elaborate tricks!

Anyway, I digress....so I was home when everyone at my job got an email requesting their presence at an impromptu meeting within 5 minutes.

I mean it "seemed" impromptu to those receiving the email as you're normally given way more advanced notice to a meeting but I'm sure the email was written months ago!!!

I heard they rounded people up like cattle going to a slaughter house, they were all seated in a meeting room waiting endlessly for everyone to arrive. Of course no one arrived on time and they were all seated just waiting, and waiting and waiting....I heard you could cut the air with a knife it was so tense and HR and the Vice President just sat there not saying a word!!!

I felt so bad hearing this story I really did, but I also felt so grateful for my stomach virus as I would have taken the pain of the virus any day over being part of that kind of atmosphere!!!

My husband says I'm way to jovial about the entire thing. Maybe I am but it's not like it was a big shocker we all knew the end was near!

So I'm on the hunt for a new job, I'm desperately trying to stay close to home, I've trekked to the city before and while I love the vibe of NYC that daily commute can wear on the body and the pocket!

But I am always optimistic and live by the credo "Everything happens for a reason".

So while on my job hunt I came across this little idea: Halloween Candy Buy Back! This has to be the neatest idea I've heard in a long time!!!

Dentists that buy you candy from you for cash and then pass it on to the military!! I mean while I don't condone the military getting bad teeth at least it's an alternative NO???

  1. I hate that story...here at my job they did the opposite. They called everyone who wasn’t getting laid off into a meeting and the people who were they called into a different meeting...and they had to leave the premises right then and there. We didn’t even get to say goodbye. It was really sad.
But things happen for a reason and there’s always light at the end of any tunnel. As long as your breathing and in your right mind
    :-0
My prayers are with you and whichever road you take next.

  2. Layoffs are hitting everywhere. I have been blessed that I'm still where I am, but I remember my Enron experience: everyone got a call and had 30 mins to vacate the bldg..it was pure chaos. Keep your head up, things always work out for the best!

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about your job. I've been in "that" meeting twice. Once was exactly like Ro's situation 2 meetings with half leaving and half not. I was in the not leaving the first time. 2nd time wasn't so 'lucky'. Anyway, I know the feeling. It sucks. But you're right everything does happen for a reason. If I didn't lose my job almost 3 years ago, I wouldn't be where I am today...happier than ever! So you never know what door God has for you to open next!

  5. During the early 90's and the continued bank merger madness, I was called to the downtown office. Our independent bank had been acquired in a merger and in 24 months 23 bank officers had been terminated. This being month 24 I asked if I should clear out my office before coming downtown. This did not please the HR director. "Just come downtown" she responded. They gave me the news that I was to be 24 in 24 and then I had to trek all the way back to our office to get my stuff. I told my boss, who was there for the news delivery, that I believed this was harder on him than on me. Perhaps I seemed flippant in my attitude but, like you, I knew this was coming so why go into a big melodramatic routine? And FYI it did turn out to be a godsend. You shall be none the worse for this change.

  6. What scares me is the fact that businesses everywhere are taking financial hits, and although I doubt the healthcare system will suffer a similar fate, you never can tell.

I agree with your husband - it was expected and it could turn out to actually be a blessing.

Hilarious @ your vivid description of what a stomach virus details.
