Ramblings: Census and High School

A few weeks ago I went to walk around the track at my local high school and I was amazed at how many "nice" cars were parked in the parking lot. I used to think that only rural Kansas kids drove to school because they lived so far away from the school, but it seems like it's slowly becoming a norm.

Where do these kids get the cars from, where do the parents get the money to buy the kids the cars? Who pays for the insurance.

QUESTION: Will you buy your child a guy once they start high school?

And did everyone fill out the census? I didn't for various, million reasons.

  1. I see the car thing with teens around here, too. I'm talkin' BMW's and Jags and Mercedes SUVs. WHAT ARE THEIR PARENTS THINKING??

My kids will get a car small enough to not make out in, but big enough to be embarassing. And they'll pay for it. Gas, insurance, all of it. I don't mid being a taxi service. Teenagers are stupid, have no grasp of how serious car accidents can be, make rash decisions, and in the end, it's not worth their life.

    So there's my answer.

The census, I did actually fill it out. But get this! I had a census worker call me anyway! AT BEDTIME, no less. All three of my kids were losing it and she kept me on the phone for 15 minutes asking me every single question on the census. WHY? To make sure i didn't make any mistakes when filling it out.

And I ask, how many tax dollars are being wasted?? There was a census worker that raped a special needs woman. There was a census worker that was a convicted child molestor, going door to door.

They spent MILLIONS on superbowl ads promoting the stupid census, but apparently didn't spend much on background checks.

And they{the government} wonder why there are so many angry Americans!

  2. I'm pretty much with Chrissy on the car thing. I'm ok with them having one, but they will definitely be paying for it.
I filled out the census too and so far haven't had any one come to my door or call me. They better not either! ha!

  3. My oldest is in high school and I will definitely help him buy a car providing he has a job and keeps his grades up. Ok why didn't you fill out the census? I did, because I don't want a census worker to come knocking at my door.

  4. drew will have a car at 16 only because his school is so far away from our house. it will not be a new car, but something we can afford, and safe for him to drive.

  5. I got a used car for my 16th birthday...I also got an after-school job shortly after and had to pay my own car insurance as well as put gas in it.

On the census- yes, I filled it out. I do think it's a good idea for a country, state, locality to have some idea of the number/type/needs of the people to are suppose to serve. Disclaimer: I'm also a Civics teacher, so I could be biased.

  6. We have six of our eight grandchildren old enough to drive or at least have a permit. The 20 year old has his, of course, but he wasn't in any hurry to get it. Three are already 16 but only one has a license and the other two aren't eager to get theirs. Two are just now taking drivers ed but they aren't anxious to get theirs either. They will all have some form of transportation but it just slays me that they don't seem to care about driving one way or the other.

Yes, we filled out our census forms. It wasn't a big deal and there wasn't anything secret to answer.
