Hood Milk...yeah that's what I said...Hood Milk.
So I started a new job at a physics institute...and let me say after my first week I realized that I've been ripped off all these years in terms of job. Everyone says "Oh make sure the benefits are good"! There’s more to a job than good benefits...of course good benefits help but there’s a lot more. For example:
For all those working mothers…how about a company day care that starts accepting infants at 6 weeks all the way up to 5 years of age. A day care that allows you to come down twice a day and breast feed you child and also asks your to pick your child up each day at 12 noon so they can have a lunch break, thus giving you time to spend lunch with YOUR child each and every day. As opposed to getting home at 6 PM and only spending a few hours with them! They also have free parking for everyone, but they even have reserved parking closer to the building for the handicapped and for the day care mothers, so that in inclement weather they can park closer and get inside quickly. (I know they thought of everything right…if you’re about to gag because I’m making you sick, stop reading now!)
How about a job with a gym, with opening hours that make sense: 7:45AM to 8:00PM. Now there’s no excuse to not loose that baby fat.
Oh can I talk about the company cafeteria (only for us folks and not open to the other 3 companies that reside in the building) that’s big enough to hold around 20 tables, 3 fridges and 3 microwaves! I know it sounds petty but some of the jobs I’ve come from just getting my own bathroom key was a fight!!! LOL
How about a second cafeteria in the basement that’s open to all three companies that reside in the building that has a grill and serves the biggest chicken pot pie you ever did see...oh and with real big chunks of chicken!!!
Direct Deposit….enough said (yes I actually worked at a company that in this day and age did NOT have direct deposit...so I’d often times forget to even deposit my check!)
How about a pension plan…where the company puts in 10% of your salary!! There are couples who’ve been here since they were in their 20’s who stand to be millionaires once they retire from this place. We all know after Enron and since the creation of 401K’s, pension plans are rare!
Plus a 401K where they actually match around 6% instead of 2%, or even no matching at all (I name no names!)
How about 12 days vacation the first year, plus 12 national holidays, 2 personal days and 10 sick days...then your second year it jumps up to 3 weeks vacation a year. If you can beat that I’m moving to your company!!!
So back to the Hood Milk...they provide quarts and yes I said plural not singular; of real milk in the fridge each day. I know it has to cost a fortune...they have whole, skimmed, 2% and vitamin A & D (yes the A & D is my choice for the next few months while I breast feed). I say all this as I’m only used to companies that provide coffee creamer, and I was grateful for that!! So the first day I’m over at the coffee machine watching people use the milk for cereal as well as coffee and I start reading the notes on the fridge:
The fridge will be cleaned out entirely at the end of each month, all items in the fridge will be discarded except the "Hood Milk"...I said to myself "Hood Milk"...what kind of ghetto name is that!! I’d never heard of such milk (even though I’d already poured half a cup of milk in my cup for my coffee...yes I like it milky) so I opened up the fridge and there big as day was the cover of the milk...HOOD MILK!!!
So anyway, along with the free Mr. Softee truck that they had my first week for appreciation day…this company is shaping out to be a match made in heaven. The ONLY down side I’ve come across is the 30 minute lunch break...but who can complain!!!
WOW!!! How freakin cool is THAT??? I'm impressed. Boy you hit the jackpot with this job. And the best part, you don't have to go through that separation anxiety issue (like I did) by leaving your baby someplace else. Oh and to be able to spend time with her in the middle of the day. Man, I would've loved being able to do that...instead of standing in the loading dock bathroom pumping 16 ozs. of milk everyday :-). O the joys of a nursing mother.

It almost sounds too good to be true in this corporate climate but glad that it exist. When my business opens an actual office and have more than 10 employees, I will keep these benefits in mind. I am happy for you so keep sharing and we will live our jobs through you!
ReplyDeletea physics institute? what do they do?
ReplyDeleteKayonne...they put physics journals, articles and any other related matter online in journal format for universities and physicists.
