Peter and Jane

My mother sent Baby C a collection of Peter and Jane books for her birthday, my mother says if she was in England she'd be reading by now.

Inhale, Exhale is what I told myself over the phone as my mother prodded me with this information.

I was about to challenge my mother, but I really can't remember that far back, was I really reading "before" I went to Kindergarten (Age 5 for British Readers lol)?

When my mother was done reciting to me what one, "should and shouldn't" be capable of before they enter school, I thought to myself, well if she was reading "before" she went to Kindergarten what would she learn "in" Kindergarten?

She's be bored stiff if I taught her how to read "before" she went to Kindergarten, and "Idle Hands are the Devil's Workshop or so my mothers religious voice says in my head!!! :0)

But, don't they spend kindergarten going over the basics, like the alphabet, for those kids that didn't go to pre K?

Of course my mothers words had me on high alert, none the less, and I panicked that my child would be a poster child for "No Child Left Behind Act" and we started on the first book, Peter and Jane 1a.

....... one evening later

It's true what they say "Mothers Really do Know Best" ......

I should have started ages ago, she LOVES the fact that she can read a book by herself, it's like the clouds just opened up and the angels are singing "Hallelujah" in her head.

The next day she practiced writing the words she'd learned the night before, when she was done she quickly demanded I take pictures and send them to dada!

Now she's demanding I video her reading for her nanny, like I need evidence for my mother to say "See I told you"! :0)

  1. Do NOT worry. Here in America, they only go as fast as the slowest kid in the class. I can PROMISE you, baby C is smarter than 99% of the class she will be in. SHE will be one of the ones sitting there bored stiff.

Simon read at 4. Felix CAN read, but I didn't push him at all like I did Simon. Now that I know that K is just a big review. For a lot of the kids, it's the first time they've ever even SEEN a book.

Seriously, don't worry at all. She is gonna do GREAT!

  2. Yep, I agree with Chrissy. She's been in preschool for a while so she should have no problem at all. Although Kindergarten isn't quite what it was when we were kids, she will be more than fine. Jake barely knew the alphabet and yes he did struggle a little bit at first, he's beyond grade level now. They all even out at some point! :) Plus, baby C is a girl. Girls just do better period!

  3. I think kids in England learn to read around the age of 4/5 but every child is different. And of course, reading at home can make a big difference. I don't think it's anything for you to worry about, clearly she picks things up quickly. I don't doubt that with a little guidance from her loving parents she'll excel at everything she tries xx
